Notes on the Dictionary by Ankyunacar

The long-expected English-Armenian Contemporary Dictionary by Ankyunacar Publishing is an effort to reflect the present state of both the English and the Armenian languages.

The dictionary covers both the British and the American usage of words, set expressions and phrases, formal and informal. Still, the phonetic information is given solely in British English. The dictionary is useful for a broad scope of users, including translators, language specialists and students. It contains 114 000 words and expressions. The compilers have used a wide range of dictionaries and other sources, old and new, published in Armenia and abroad.

The interval between the publication of the latest large English-Armenian dictionary and of the present one has been about 30 years, and serious changes have taken place in both languages since then. There have been significant developments in existing or newly established spheres of life such as computing, telecommunication, human rights, social sciences, religion etc

They have resulted in the need to properly reflect these developments in Armenian. Thus, the equivalents of some English words one can find in this dictionary, were taken from contemporary newspapers and books, from the Internet, from recently published dictionaries, while others were introduced by the compilers. For the users' convenience, abbreviations, contractions and geographical names were given together with the main vocabulary.

Ankyunacar Publishing staff sincerely hope that this dictionary will be of use to its readers, as that will be indeed the best reward for their years of work. The compilers are looking forward to the reader's comments and suggestions which will help them improve the future (including electronic) editions of the dictionary.
